Writing resume bullets is often the most difficult part of writing a resume. There are a few things that don't belong on a resume for work. Resume writing services offer you various packages and some also provide additional mentoring or other job search and interviewing information that someone may benefit from to raise your professionalism and dependability. For this reason, you wish to make sure your resume will help you distinguish yourself among the rest of the applicants as a fantastic fit for the position by tailoring the information that you include to your audience and to the position des cription. Return to your list of skills and discover the skills you saw in the work ad. Use a skills-based resume if your prior job experience doesn't necessarily fit with the job you're applying for. Since a recruiter often examines the objective first, ensure you spotlight your strongest attributes and experience so that you can prove you're the ideal selection for the personal driver job. 4 Helpful Tips For Your Accounting Career - Work It Daily
4 Helpful Tips For Your Accounting Career - Work It Daily They say life is a marathon, not a sprint. Viewing your career the same way can help you handle its various ups and downs - from being downsized to getting offered one of the hottest accounting jobs in your area. Though your co-workers and managers might have great advice for how you can get through your jobâs specific tasks, we spoke to a few industry experts to get their long-term advice and tips for your accounting career. 1. Become A CPA CPA - Itâs an acronym youâre likely already familiar with, and might already have on your business card after your name. The certified public accountant designation is one that opens doors for people to more and greater accounting jobs. Financial consultant and auditor Milton Galeas, who has over 15 yearsâ experience across both the public and private sector, considers becoming a CPA one of the most important things a person can do to excel in accounting. Galeas points to the versatility a CPA will afford you. After becoming one, you will be able to branch out into a wide range of industries in finance, and be free to work in internal or external auditing. This includes the private sector, where accounting jobs that become available to you include areas such as financial reporting, corporate tax and Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) compliance. 2. Know The Basics Well Los Angeles-based CPA Robert Wheeler, author of the new book âThe Money Nerve: Navigating the Emotions of Moneyâ (Balboa Press, 2013), stresses the importance of understanding the fundamentals of accounting. âWork a year or two in private accounting, learn some accounting software and get familiar with how clients do their books so that you can communicate with them about things that matter,â he advises. Knowing these basics will make it easier to communicate with your clients. âMany CPAs don't understand the accounting software and aren't able to show clients how to do journal entries, bank reconciliations or other practical matters that clients need guidance on,â says Wheeler. 3. Donât Trust The Computer Itâs one thing to use spreadsheets to help you get your job done, but itâs another to rely too heavily on their calculations. Errors can occur at any stage of a process, and it is important to verify that formulas have been entered properly and that the machine is doing what you set it up to do. âI have found that many of the younger hires assume that if they input information in the computer, it will come out right,â Wheeler shares. âSeveral times I have reviewed the work and itâs wrong. When I ask the staff person, âDid you look at the completed forms after you input the data?â they usually say, âNo. I am sure that I input it correctly so I didn't bother to look at the output.â Wheeler reminds those in accounting jobs that double-checking the numbers and reviewing your work multiple times is key to getting the figures right. He says he has seen many botched financial statements that resulted from no one checking the numbers because they had been entered into a formula in Excel. 4. Show Interest In Your Organization, Not Just Your Job Many accounting jobs can seem to be all about the numbers, and in a way they are. But the longevity of your career depends on more than just getting the math right. Companies are attracted to employees who believe in what they do and who have ambition. Especially when you are interviewing for a position, this is important to keep in mind. Ian Smith is the executive director of business and administration at the University of Cincinnati Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. When he interviews candidates, he is turned off by those who think only of their immediate employment. âIt's obvious they want âaâ job... not âmyâ job. They need to be interested and have a good story for why they want my job one day, and show they are interested in the organization.â Photo Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

At Simon Business School, Students Become Investors
At Simon Business School, Students Become Investors A couple weeks back, we spoke with Zachary Slayback of Praxis, a career accelerator that pairs the brightest young talent with high-growth startups. Praxis began, in part, as a response to perceived shortcomings in higher education. The organizations founder, Isaac Moorehouse, saw that many college students werent learning the skills they actually needed to succeed in the business world, so he started a program that would teach those very skills through experiential learning, rather than classroom lectures. I bring this up because I wonder how Slayback and Moorehouse would respond to the Simon Venture kenntniserlangung(SVF), an early stage seed fund run by MBA and masters students at the University of Rochesters Simon School of Business. Many believe that the skills gap is due, in part, to ahigher education system that doesnt equip students with r eal-world skills. If that is the case, the SVF is a clear example of one school addressing the problem directly by giving studentsthe opportunity to step out of the classroom and into thereal world.Venture capital is becoming more mainstream and getting more publicity, says Brad Banikowski,a former student manager of the SVF who now sits on the fundsadvisory board, which consists of alumni and faculty members. Working with startups and entrepreneurs is becoming more a focus for the university as well. The amount you can learn through the SVF beyond whats covered in a classroom setting just adds to the education.A Student-Run Venture FundThe SVF began in 2012 as the result of a $1 million donation from Simon School of Business alumnus Dan Lazarek. Lazarek was later joined by alumnus Joe Abrams, who donated an additional $750,000. The fund made its first investment in 2013, and to date, it has invested $400,000 across 12 companies, with additional commitments of more than $1.4 million for future investments.Students can participate in the fund in one of three ways as regular members, who attend meetings to watch and learn as analysts, who carry out due diligence on companies and pitch potential investments to the fund and as members of the student management team, whooversee the fund.Senior analysts become leaders if they do good work and express willingness to take on more responsibility and leadership, explains Lavin Godhwani, current president of the student management team. Its really a collaborative thing as well, adds Banikowski Students get to identify different roles they may want to take on for the following year, and the current management team will do the best we can to set them up for success in the next year through shadowing experiences and things like that. While the funds advisory board has the final say in which investments are made, the overall process is almost entirelystudent-driven.Teams of student analysts pitch companies for potential inves tment to club members during weekly meetings. Members critique and vote on behauptung pitches. Those pitches that pass the vote are brought to the advisory board, which works with the student management team to decide whether or not an investment should be made. The Benefits of Diving InSimon students view the SVF as more than just an enjoyable extracurricular they see it as a critical component of their education that lets them engage with the world outside of the classroom. The first and most important thing is it helps you build a network in the community of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists that you wouldnt have otherwise had the chance to deal with, Godhwani says. For example, Godhwani recalls one instance in which he was attending a networking event in New York City. It can be hard to catch the attention of established professionals at behauptung gatherings, but Godhwani had no problem His experience with the fund made peoples ears perk up, and many attendees were interested in learning more about the SVF.Godhwani also says the fund makes students better, more interesting candidates when they graduate and hit the job market. It really adds to their experience, having actual money invested in companies instead of just project work or hypothetical case studies that you do in school, he says.Chaithany Krishna Gaddam, a senior analyst at the fund, agrees SVF has shown us a platform where we get to put theory into practice through real-world businesses Also, SVF gave us an opportunity to interact with entrepreneurs and learn from their experiences.Banikowski says that one of his favorite parts of being involved with the fund was getting to sit in on tough conversationsfor which lectures alone can neversubstitute. To give you an idea Sometimes, a portfolio company is thinking about either selling an additional part of their equity or possibly changing from a C corp. to an LLC., he explains. We get to listen to the board members discuss how that affects ur inv estment. They ask tough questions, and they give input, and that back and forth is definitely not something you get in a classroom.Sarah Spoto, who served as a senior analyst last year and is now on the management team as vice president of marketing and communications, calls the SVF one of the experiential learning experiences that make Simon so unique. Its an amazing learning experience if youre interested in finance, entrepreneurship, or marketing, she says. The mentorship and training resources are a huge benefit as well. We offer our fund members training sessions by professors and VC professionals that have been really popular. This fall, we even had an alumnus from Silicon Valley share his experience in VC out west. The takeaway here, in my eyes, is that we need to tweak our higher education system if we want to produce talented individualswho are ready, willing, and able to jump into the workforce and hit the ground running. The experiential learning offered by the SVF is one w ay to do that, as are the apprenticeships of Praxis. One hopes more educationalinstitutions will follow suit.(Full disclosure The Simon Venture Fund recently invested in Recruiter.com.)

ALJ Excepted from Competitive Service
ALJ Excepted from Competitive ServiceALJ Excepted from Competitive ServiceALJ Excepted from Competitive Service Executive Order Excepting Administrative Law Judgesfrom the Competitive ServiceNicole Schultheis, J.D. Senior ALJ Consultant, Writer and AuthorJuly 12, 2018Attention Administrative Law Judge candidatesAs of July 10, 2018, every federal agency that hires Administrative Law Judges must use its own process for selecting qualified candidates. In the wake of Lucia et al. v. Securities and Exchange Commission, President Trump signed an Executive Order Tuesday which abolishes the competitive hiring of ALJs and does away with OPMs competitive exam and register OPMs latest round of exams and structured interviews were completed just last month, before Lucia welches decided. As far as we know, no 2017 ALJ candidates have been notlageified regarding the outcome of their structured interview or proctored exam. However, as we read the Supreme Courts opinion and Tuesdays Executive Order, OPM no longer has the authority to screen or competitively rate these candidates or even maintain its current ALJ register. The Presidents EO is good news for those fed up with the ALJ exam, the scoring process, and the endless waiting to be put on a cert list by OPM so that they can be selected for hire. Many highly qualified candidates including a number of sitting trial court and administrative law judges in their home states-have criticized OPMs inability to screen their credentials properly and indeed the entire ALJ exam process. These candidates can now be evaluated directly by the hiring agency, much as attorneys are, as Excepted Service hires. From now on, if you want to be an ALJ for the Department of Labor (41 ALJs as of 2017) or the Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals (101 ALJs as of 2017), you can apply there directly, if and when there is an opening, rather than endure OPMs onerous process that, if it leads anywhere, most likely lands you an offer to hear Social Secu rity cases instead. (A complete listing of agencies that hire their own ALJ can be found here.)At least one big issue remains. Per the Supreme Court, ALJs are considered inferior officers of the United States who can be appointed only by the President or the head hiring agency. However, in Lucia, the Court declined to accept the governments request to decide if or how the President or agency head can remove ALJs, once appointed. Whether ALJs can now be fired or sanctioned for failing to do as they are told, in light of the Administrative Procedure Act, not to mention due process, is unclear.* Fresh constitutional challenges are already being formulated. As we write to you today, relevant OPM and SSA web pages have not changed. But keep an eye out for updates here and here. Well keep you posted, too.*Neither Lucia nor this EO affect the hiring of Immigration Judges (IJs). The Department of Justice/Executive Office for Immigration Review hires hundreds of IJs who serve at the pleasure of the Attorney General. For example, these candidates have been asked, during the interview process, how they would respond, in deciding a case before them, if the Attorney General issued an order they disagreed with. In comparison, as of March 2017, EOIR had but one ALJ. EOIRs ALJs hear only a limited category of cases, under a statute that governs the employment of aliens.Updates7/12 Memorandum for Heads of Executive Departments and Agencies7/11 Democrats, Advocacy Groups Pan Order Moving Administrative Judges Out of Competitive Service7/5 OPM on Executive Orders OPM Issues Guidance on Executive Orders, But Many Questions Remain Article author Nicole SchultheisSince 2010, Maryland attorney Nicole Schultheis has supported candidates seeking to become Administrative Law Judges, Immigration Judges, Administrative Judges, and Administrative Patent Judges.
